Certain Employees of Chinese Technology Companies to be Denied Entry into the U.S.

This past Wednesday, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that the U.S. would be placing immigration restrictions on certain employees of Chinese tech companies. Among those companies is Huawei, which both he and President Trump, among others, believe are a risk to our national security.

Of the move, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said, “Whether it’s TikTok or any of the other Chinese communications platforms, apps, infrastructure, this administration has taken seriously the requirement to protect the American people from having their information end up in the hands of the Chinese Communist Party.”

Though the specific employees that will be restricted from traveling into the United States are not entirely clear as of yet, Pompeo simply stated that they will not be allowed in “if the Secretary of State has reason to believe the alien’s entry ‘would have potentially serious adverse foreign policy consequences for the United States.”

This is a very complicated immigration matter, and countries across the world have their unique perspectives on it. While Great Britain has recently banned Huawei from using its 5G networks, the spokesperson for British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has stated that the move came mainly as a result of the threat of sanctions against Great Britain. However, Mike Pompeo had a different take on their move to ban Huawei, stating, “I actually think they did this because their security teams came to the same conclusion that ours have — is that you can’t protect this information. This information that transits across these untrusted networks that are of Chinese origin, will almost certainly end up in the hands of the Chinese Communist Party and so I think they did this for the right reasons.”

China, on the other hand, took a far different approach to the recent move by the United States, with the Chinese Ambassador to the UK, Liu Xiaoming, stating, ‘”China and Europe should see each other as partners and abandon the cold war mentality. Those who see China as systematic rival or as a potentially hostile state have got it all wrong. They have chosen the wrong target and they are heading in the wrong direction.”

The outcome of the most recent decision by the U.S. government remains to be seen.
