Green Card Eligibility

There are several eligibility requirements that anyone who wishes to obtain a green card must meet before they can actually be granted permanent resident status. These requirements are heavily dependent on which immigration category you fall into, whether it be family, marriage, employment, etc. Depending on your category, you may need to find someone to sponsor your petition for permanent residency. Some people are able to file their own petition, but it depends on the situation. After your petition has been approved and you have lawfully entered the United States, you can apply for an adjustment of status. If you are doing this from outside of the United States, you must go through consular processing.

The Green Card Application Process

As previously mentioned, either yourself or your sponsor will file a petition to begin the green card application process. You can file a green card application or visa application with the U.S. Department of State only after your petition has been approved. Once your application is submitted, you must attend a biometrics appointment, where you have to provide your signature, photos of yourself, and your fingerprints. After biometrics have been completed, you may be asked to attend an interview with USCIS officials so they can obtain additional information about your application. You should find out whether your application has been approved or denied shortly after the interview.

Receiving a Green Card

If your application has been approved, you will receive your green card. This is an exciting step in your immigration journey, and you may now be able to enjoy the benefits associated with permanent residency. Some of these benefits include employment eligibility, driving privileges, a Social Security Card, and the ability to travel out of the country for less than one year. It is important that you carry your green card with you at all times. You should also be aware of whether your green card expires. Some people are subject to a 2-year or 10-year expiration date. If you have a 2-year green card, you will have to go through the process of removing conditions of your permanent residency within 90 days before the 2-year anniversary. If you have a 10-year green card, you can renew it with Form I-90.
